Tasmanian Wines

Located off the southern coast of Australia, Tasmania is Australia’s coolest wine region, in terms of both temperature and reputation. The country’s sunny but generally dry, maritime climate produces racy, refreshing wines made possible by the cold seas surrounding the island which keep temperatures at a yearly average of less than 15°C. The wine industry here is small with only a fraction of the wines being exported due to high local demand. Aromatic, dry whites are made here from Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. Sparkling whites made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are very successful here and reds with naturally high acidity and good balance are made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir grapes, with the latter being tipped to be the next big thing.
