Walker Bay

Located on the southern tip of South Africa, Walker Bay is one of the best wine districts in South Africa, with one of the coolest, maritime climates of any in South Africa. Close to the seaside resort of Hermanus, which is famous for its whale watching opportunities, Walker Bay grows the early ripening Pinot Noir variety as well as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Grenache and Syrah. The climate here is relatively cool compared to many new World wine regions with the Atlantic Ocean and the Benguela current from Antarctica bringing cool air to the region. This cool air is then trapped in the bay and its valleys by the surrounding mountains, cooling the vineyards and allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and retain the acidity essential to great wines.
